Different types of Tankers! There are different types of tankers used in transporting oil. The coastal tankers are the smaller tankers who have less than 50,000 DWT that could be used for transportation of refined products such as gasoline and gasoil. This table could be used as a reference to compare the DWT of the different types of tankers when considering them for purchase.

History on Jahre Viking

It takes a world class ship repairer to reconstruct the world largest tanker. This tanker by the name of Jahre Viking has an incredible dwt 564,761 after reconstruction. This ship also has a draft of 24.61. She was built during December 1976. This ship carries the flag of Norway.

In 1981, she was put to sea under the name of Seawise Giant. The two major states oil-producing states Iraq and Iran were at war and at that time this ship ply her trade as a transporter for the much needed oil in those times. During those times, any ships carrying Iranian or Arab oil would be under attack by the military in Iraq. In fact, every tanker using the Persian Gulf would be attacked. This tanker was soon sighted and subsequently attacked. In 1986, she was targeted by Iraqi jets who fired Exocet missiles in to her hull. This ship never had a chance. Extensively damaged, she sank in the shallow waters off Iran's Kharg Island. It was there, she stayed for the remainder of the war. She could have sat indefinitely had it not been for the fact that she was still worth a lot of money even in the damaged state she was in.

This ship was then sold to the Norman International in Norway for $35 million. Repair work then began in1990 in Keppel Shipyard in Singapore. The 3,700 tons of damaged steel were replaced. However she was not fully utilised much by Norman International and was again this time sold to Jorden Jahre for a sum of 39 million. It was then how this ship got its name Jahre Viking.
